Bordeaux is one of the best-known wine regions situated in south-western France and one of the most important in the world, producing over 900 million bottles a year. The Garonne River divides the region into the right and the left bank.

The left bank situated on the left side of the Garonne River has two of its most famous regions, the Medoc and the Graves which are both renowned for their Grand Clu Classé wines such as Châteaux Lafite, Mouton Rothschild, Latour, Margaux and Haut-Brion. Here the Cabernet Sauvignon is King and where arguably it producers the worlds most remarkable examples. What is certain is that all great cabernets in the world came from vines from these regions.

The right bank of the Gironde River is primarily the two wine-growing villages of Pomerol and St. Emilion. The smallest of the great red wine regions of Bordeaux, Pomerol produces some of the most expensive, dizzying and glamorous wines in the world. In doing so, Pomerol remains the only major Bordeaux appellation in which there has never been a formal, rigid hierarchy of quality. St. Emilion introduced a two-tier Grand Cru Classe system in 1955, similar to the classification of the left bank of 1855. The St.-Émilion chateaus were classified on the condition that the classification should be reviewed every ten years

Bordeaux in the last 20 years has seen increasing numbers of incredibly dedicated producers in Bordeaux's less glamorous appellations, such as Bordeaux AC, Côtes de Bordeaux, Fronsac, and Lalande de Pomerol for reds and Entre-Deux-Mers, and Blaye for dry whites. Their wines usually cost a mere fraction of the classed growth prices, but the dedication of these producers ensures outstanding quality and value for money.
