If you are looking to get a little more from your wine experience at Iron Gate, we have the exciting option of also booking a tour of our onsite winery. During this experience a member from our winemaking and/ or cellar door team will take you on a guided tour of our wine making facilities, this is where we produce our award winning wines that you are able to taste in our cellar door.  The tour will take you into our vineyard area where the group will discuss all things viticulture including: wine varieties, vineyard practices, weather and climate as well as terroir. You will then move into our winery and have the winemaking process explained to you, during this part of the tour you will be educated on; processing fruit, winery equipment, winemaking practices, oak and our own personal winemaking traditions and style.    This entire experience should take approximately 20-30 minutes and we recommend enjoying a wine tasting prior to or following your winery tour.    The tour is capped at 8 adults, kids are of course welcome but it is the responsibility of the parent to ensure their children are respectful of our facilities. Since our establishment is pet friendly, you are more than welcome to bring your k9 companion, leads are compulsory. About the Centennial Cellar: Seppeltsfield’ s history is punctuated with many moments of visionary foresight. Seppeltsfield’ s founder, Joseph Seppelt and his eldest son, Benno, were particularly renowned for their longer term vision for the estate, closely following custodianship principles to ensure a legacy was passed on to future generations. This is no more evident than Benno Seppelt’s inception of the Centennial Cellar - a truly unique and unparalleled system of maturing single barrels of vintage Tawny for 100 years before release. In 1866, plans to build a new bluestone cellar were started by Joseph. 12 years later in 1878 and following the passing of his father, Benno completed the stone cellars. In a gesture both unique and inspirational, Benno selected a puncheon of his finest wine and gave instructions that it was not to be bottled for 100 years. This single barrel of 1878 Tawny port was to remain maturing in a separate room within the bluestone cellars, untouched in the same location 100 years. The tradition of laying down a barrel of the finest wine from each vintage was continued every year following and continues to do so today. The Centennial Cellar now comprises an unbroken lineage of every vintage from the current year back to 1878. A living museum of Australian winemaking history and undoubtedly the ‘ jewel in the crown’ of the Seppeltsfield estate, the Centennial Cellar is an absolute must see for visitors.

These sessions are one of the more entertaining and informative classes. The class starts with everyone being separated into groups of four, sitting down with the winemaker and being taken through six single variety  red wines; exploring the aroma, structure and  palate-feel of each. Each group is then given measuring cylinders  and half an hour to come up with their favourite  blend, for example, mixing 50% shiraz, 30% merlot,  10% petit verdot and 10% tempranillo. These ‘favourite blends’ are then collated and poured to the groups,  so they can be blind-tasted and judged by everyone  involved – with an ultimate winner appointed on the day.   Shared platters of our NSW charcuterie / cheese boards to share down the table throughout your session.

A relaxing day out with an emphasis on a wide range of wine accompanied by superb food and stunning scenery. HIGHLIGHTS Coldstream Hills Medhurst Domaine Chandon Yering Station Winebar Restaurant  Produce Store De Bortoli (producers of Noble One, Australia's most awarded wine) Our first stop is at the Coldstream Hills Winery at Coldstream. Established by James Halliday, one of Australia's leading authors and commentators on wine, the wines are beautifully crafted and have enjoyed success at numerous wine shows, especially the chardonnay and pinot noir.  It's then a short drive to the charming Medhurst Vineyard. Very boutique in size with only 35 acres under vine, this family owned vineyard was established in 1999. Located in the dress circle of the Yarra Valley, they produce a small selection of well crafted table wines. We then head to the very famous and very French Domaine Chandon. Enjoy a tour of the production facilities before settling down to a glass of premium sparkling wine (methode champenoise) while nibbling on cheese and bread and taking in the glorious vista. We then travel to Yering Station for lunch in their stunning Wine Bar Restaurant. With its world class views and cuisine, you'll have a full a la carte selection from which to select your main course meal. After lunch, visit the original winery (circa 1859) that features local artworks and produce as well as estate wines to taste.  Our final stop for the day is the De Bortoli Winery at Dixons Creek. As Italian as Domaine Chandon is French, it's a great end to the day with superbly flavoured cheeses that compliment the sparkling, table and dessert wines.  Our journey home takes us through Steels Creek and Christmas Hills for superb Valley views and the occasional kangaroo. Expect to arrive back at your accommodation around 6.30pm.
